Interim Management

What is 'Interim Management'?

Interim Management is the use of a senior, experienced manager to 'plug a gap' for a few months or weeks. It differs fromconsultancy because, firstly, the interim manager usually takes responsibility for running a project, department or team and secondly in cost with interim managers bringing senior management experience and consultancy skills for a fraction of the cost.

When is 'Interim Management' used?

Interim managers usually meet one of three needs:

  • To carry out a project that the organisation's managers do not have time to address or is beyond their experience.
  • To fill a gap caused by a sudden resignation or termination or by a prolonged absence because of pregnancy, sickness or extended training.
  • To coach and support a newly-appointed manager who has ability and potential but lacks the experience for his or her new role.

What are the advantages of using an 'Interim Manager'?

  • Speed. An interim manager will start work within days and have an immediate impact..
.

  • Experience. Interim managers have worked in many organisations in all sorts of situations and are usually too senior for the position they fill temporarily so they hit the ground running.

  • Flexibility. When the assignment is complete, the interim manager simply moves on.

  • Skills transfer. An interim manager will coach existing staff and pass on his or her experience.

  • Cost. The cost is similar to that of employing a senior manager direct but with no hidden extras. Interim managers are usually paid a flat, daily rate for an agreed duration.
  • Confidentiality. Any interim manager will expect to sign a confidentiality agreement and all have high ethical standards.

Where and when did 'Interim Management' originate?

The term 'Interim Management' probably originated in the in the Netherlands in the 1980s. The first known interim HR manager in the UK was Martin Yallop who provided 'locum' personnel management services from 1986. The use of interim managers is now widespread and growing in the UK, USA and parts of Europe. Several of the well-known international management consultancies or executive search organisations now have expanding interim management divisions.

Who are 'Interim Managers'?

Interim managers are usually very experienced directors or managers who have held senior positions in private or public organisations. They have chosen interim management as a career because of it's constantly varying challenges. They are hard working, strong leaders, who are well organised, need little guidance and enjoy new experiences and ideas[1].
